Issue no. 1 | Term 1, Week 1 | February 3, 2012

From the Principal

Top: (L-R) New Staff: Vinitha Lobo, Kylie Boag, Suri McGee, Jesseca Geraghty, Roger Mills, Jessamy Harris, Vivienne Bradtke. Above: Jesseca Geraghty at the new Student Services Office (located in the main building next to the Staffroom).

As we embark on the 2012 academic year, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome back all of the students and parents of St Peter’s Girls’ School and in particular, welcome all of the new families to the School.

We were delighted to learn of the 2011 Year 12 results in December of last year. As many of you would have read in the letter we sent home via email, the results were again outstanding with all students in Year 12 attaining their SACE, 50% of the students gaining an ATAR of 90 and above, which places them in the top 10% of the state, 33% were in the top 5% of the state and a staggering 21% were in the top 2% of the state. Margaret Gayen was the Dux of the School receiving a perfect score of 99.95, one of 25 Governor of South Australia Awards presented statewide and 4 subject Merit Awards. In total we had 30 subject Merit awards attained by our students across a range of subjects including Chemistry, English Studies, English Communications, French, Mathematical Studies, Modern History, PE, Psychology, Physics, Research Project and Visual Arts. While it is difficult to single out particular performances, I was particularly buoyed by our results in the Research Project, where we gained 12 subject Merit awards, and English Studies where 11% of all of the A+s awarded statewide were given to students at St Peter’s Girls.

Over the past few days I have thanked the teachers of the School for helping make these fantastic results come to fruition. Collectively they have worked very hard to give the girls the encouragement, support, and assistance needed for them to reach their full potential, not only last year, but throughout their entire time here at the School. These sort of results do not happen by chance; they are the legacy of countless hours of tuition, guidance, support and sheer hard work.

Over the holidays there has been a great deal of activity and work happening in the School buildings and grounds. New air conditioners have been installed in the Middle School classrooms, internal blinds have been fitted to all classrooms in the St Michael’s Wing, extensive painting has been carried out throughout the School, new carpet has been laid in the lower level of the Stott Wing and Chiverton and we have created a new Student Services area outside the Staffroom.

The ICT Department have also been kept busy as they oversaw a large scale upgrade to the IT infrastructure, using best practice virtualisation technology  to replace the seven physical servers with two large hosts and virtualise all servers. In addition, they have been imaging all of the new laptops to be rolled out as part of the 1to1 Program for students in Years 10-12. They have also been installing TV monitors around the School which will be used as Bulletin Boards, relaying important and up to the minute information to students, staff and parents.

The new Student Services area, which is located in the eastern section of the Main Building, will be a great asset to students, staff and parents. At our first full School Assembly on Tuesday, I explained to students that from now on, rather than knocking on the staffroom door, they should go to Mrs Geraghty in the Student Services area and she would set up a time to meet with staff. Also, if students wish to hand up work outside class time, it can be submitted to Mrs Geraghty, who will in turn record and date the submission of work and then hand it on to the teacher concerned. Parents wanting to get a message to their daughter during the course of the day should ring the Student Services Office on 8334 2261.

Mrs McGee holds a Bachelor of Arts (majoring in German), a Diploma of Languages (Indonesian) and a Cert IV in teaching English to speakers of other languages, all from the University of Adelaide. She also holds a Bachelor of Education (Junior Primary and Primary) from Flinders University.

Mr Roger Mills will this year be teaching Mathematics, Science, PE and IT and will be a Year 7 Home Group Teacher. Over the past 7 years, Mr Mills has taught in three DECs schools: Seaford School, Bordertown High and Elliston Area Schools. During that time he has taught a range of subjects at various year levels and has held a number of positions of responsibility. His teaching experience includes the teaching of Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, General Science, SOSE, PE and IT. Mr Mills holds a Bachelor of Education from Flinders University, majoring in Chemistry and Biology.

Miss Kylie Boag will be taking one of the two Year 4 classes this year. After completing a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Health Sciences in 2009, Miss Boag has since worked as a Temporary Relief Teacher at a number of Schools including St Peter’s Girls in 2011. During that time we quickly came to see that Miss Boag was a very accomplished, adaptable and enthusiastic teacher who would be a great asset to the School.

Miss Jessamy Harris will be teaching one of the two Year 2 classes. Miss Harris comes to St Peter's Girls from St Andrew’s School where she worked as a teacher. She holds a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education and a Diploma of Children’s Services. We are very confident that Miss Harris and Mrs Sandercock will work well together to deliver an exciting and innovative program for our Year 2 students.

Mrs Vinitha Lobo joins the Mathematics Department, teaching Years 8, 11 and 12 Mathematics and taking a Year 8 Home Group this year. Mrs Lobo comes to St Peter’s Girls from St Columba College where she has worked as a teacher of Mathematics (Years 8-12) and Years 7 and 9 Science for the past 7 years. Mr Best will take all of Ms Spry’s load, which includes the teaching of Years 11 and 12 History, Year 12 Legal Studies and Years 9 and 10 Humanities, as well as being a Year 11 Home Group teacher. Mr Best holds a Bachelor of Education from the University of Adelaide and a Diploma of Teaching (Sec) and has many years of experience teaching History, Legal Studies, Ancient and Classical Studies and Society and Environment. Mr Best has been a Faculty leader, an Acting Deputy Principal, an Assistant Principal and former Chief Examiner for History. He is currently on a number of Councils and Committees including DECs Advisory Board for History, History Syllabus Advisory Committee (SSABSA), Setting and Marking Assessment Panels (SSABSA) and Vice President of the History Teachers' Association. In addition, he is on the executive of the Legal Studies Teachers' Association, a judge for the Premier’s Anzac Award and is co-author for the present Year 12 History Course as well as being South Australia's past representative on the National History (ACARA) writing group.

Mrs Julie Wells will be replacing Mrs Judy Lovett as Senior Librarian whilst she is on Long Service Leave. Mrs Wells is not new to St Peter’s Girls, having worked here in 2008 replacing Mrs Sofia Low in the Junior School Library. Since finishing her role as Manager of the Walkerville Public Library, Mrs Wells has taken up a number of contract roles at various schools. There is no doubt that Mrs Wells fully understands the demands of the classroom teaching, given she taught English, Geography and History in schools for 18 years prior to her work in Municipal Libraries. Mrs Wells holds a Bachelor of Arts and Diploma of Education from the University of Adelaide, and a Graduate Diploma of Arts from Charles Sturt University.

Ms Gabriel Fitzgerald will again be teaching German to a small number of ex-Annesley students. Ms Fitzgerald has for a number of years combined teaching and counselling work and her most recent teaching appointment was at Annesley College where she was coordinator of Languages, ESL and International Exchange. She has a long list of qualifications including a Bachelor of Arts, a Masters of Arts, Bachelor of Arts with Hons in Behavioural Science, Masters of Business Administration and is currently undertaking a PhD in organisational behavioural change and how it translates into peoples' private lives.

More News to Follow

In next week's Weekly News, I will be detailing the School's operational strategies for 2012, give an up-date on the development of the School's next Strategic Plan and will make a response to the media attention regarding the SACE, that has been bombarding the press in recent weeks.

Happy Birthday Sr Scholastica

Sister Scholastica's 100th Birthday

Today (Friday 3 February 2012) we celebrate the 100th birthday of Sister Scholastica, Old Scholar and a former Principal of our School.

As Violet Ferris she attended our School from 1928 to 1931, when she was a Prefect. She was an excellent tennis and hockey player and a champion runner and hurdler. She won the School’s Senior Cup for four consecutive years and was captain of the intercollegiate sports team which won the Inter-School Cup in 1931. Shortly after leaving school, Violet decided to join the Community of the Sisters of the Church, an Anglican order founded by Mother Emily in England. The order had established schools for girls in Australian capital cities and other Commonwealth countries. Violet was given the name, Scholastica, which was chosen for her by her father, and spent a decade at St Michael’s Convent near London.

From 1947 to 1955 Sister Scholastica was Principal of St Peter’s Girls’ School, which at that time was located at Kermode Street, North Adelaide. She earned herself the nickname, “Sister Athletica”, for sometimes being seen running, and on one occasion demonstrating to students how to hurdle, despite the long skirt of her habit.

When the Adelaide Children’s Hospital wanted to expand, Sister Scholastica searched for a new site for the School and was instrumental in purchasing the property, “Chiverton”, in the foothills next to the Ferguson Conservation Park. She also led the extensive fundraising so that a new “state-of- the-art” classroom block could be built. The School moved to Stonyfell in 1957.

From 1960 to 1972 Sister Scholastica was Principal of St Michael’s Grammar School in Melbourne. She later worked as a missionary in Honiara in the Solomon Islands where the Community of the Sisters of the Church is still strong.

Sister Scholastica returned to the Sisters’ House in England in 2001 but is always interested in news of her old School.

From all the girls at St Peter’s Girls, we wish Sister Scholastica a very happy birthday. We have ensured some special gifts have been sent to her in England to mark this wonderful milestone.

Updated House Logos

After consultation with the Old Scholars’ Council, 2012 Prefects, Heads of Houses and staff, the School is excited to launch modernised versions of the House logos. These logos were designed by current parent and Graphic Designer, Jo West, who as a result of her long history with the School has maintained the traditional elements of the logos while allowing them to be used more flexibly in electronic formats. New modernised House banners will be designed in consultation with the 2012 Prefects and are expected to be launched at Choral Night this year. The new banners will be used in conjunction with the old banners to symbolise the enduring spirit of the House system at the School.

BHP Billiton Science Awards

Each year students from Years 8-9 are required, as part of their Science course, to produce an entry in the South Australian competition known as the Oliphant Science Awards. Students from all year levels across the School are also encouraged to enter the competition in any category they choose, whether it be posters, essays, photography, experiments, inventions, games, multimedia products or crystal growing.

Successful entrants in the Experiment category at state level are encouraged to submit their entry to the national competition known as the BHP Billiton Science Awards. Following on from the great success experienced by St Peter’s Girls' students at last year’s local competition, we were delighted to receive notification that two of our students reached semi-finalist status in the BHP Billiton Awards.

Georgina Belder (Year 11) received recognition for her experiment entitled, “An Investigation Into Solar Energy”, while Maithili Mishra (Year 10) produced a successful entry, named “Investigating the Antibacterial Properties of Turmeric Powder”. Both girls are to be congratulated on their success in this extremely competitive and prestigious national competition, and once more, all students are asked to consider entering the Oliphant Science Awards in 2012.
Information on these awards is available from Mrs Emily Cohen (Head of Science), any member of the Science staff, or at http://www.sasta.asn.au/events/oliphant_science_awards Students in Years 8-9 will begin their entries this term, and more information for other students who may wish to enter will be provided in an upcoming Weekly News edition.

Paul Dillon Seminar

Paul Dillon has been working in the area of drug education for the past 25 years. Through his own business, Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia (DARTA), he has been contracted by many agencies and organisations across the country to give regular updates on current drug trends within the community. He has also worked with many school communities to ensure that they have access to good quality information and best practice drug education.

In recent years, he has worked extensively with a range of sporting organisations including the Australian Cricketers' Association, the Rugby Union Players' Association and the Football Federation of Australia to provide training workshops to elite athletes on a range of alcohol and drug issues. He has also written a best-selling book for parents, titled ‘Teenagers, Alcohol and Drugs‘, which was released in 2009. With a broad knowledge of a range of content areas, Paul regularly provides media comment and is regarded as a key social commentator in Australia, appearing on a wide range of television programs including Sunrise, TODAY and the 7PM Project discussing topical issues. Paul also had a regular spot on a national radio program on Triple J for seven years where he dealt with current youth drug issues.

Our School community welcomes Paul again this year to speak to our Year 10, 11 and 12 students, staff and parents.

A parent information session will be held in the Humzy Theatre on the evening of  Wednesday 22 February from 7.30pm. We would like to invite parents from all year levels to hear Paul speak. His informative and interesting talk last year was well received by the parents who attended.

Student Support Team welcomes New Saints Girls!

On Monday 30 January, seventy new students attended Orientation Morning for new students. Starting a new school is an exciting time, but it can also be a bit daunting. To ease the nerves, our new Student Support Team was on hand to meet and greet new girls and their families as they arrived for their first assembly.

The Student Support Team is a group of girls from Years 9 to Year 12 who have been chosen to work together to welcome and support new students to the Middle and Senior School. The team, led by Year 12 student Marina Spajic, enjoyed interacting with the new girls after the assembly and paired up with new girls to help them discover their way around the Saints Girls intranet.

The Student Support Team has adopted the question mark as their symbol. The team will be wearing their team badge in the first two weeks of school so they can be easily identified by the new girls at School. The '?' symbol is their way of reminding the new girls that they are available to answer any questions and to help them at any time. Different from the ‘buddy system’, which sees new girls paired with a student in their Home Group, the Student Support Team members are available to support all new girls in the Middle and Senior school and will take an active interest in them across the year. The Student Support Team’s aim is to make sure every new girl has the support and encouragement she needs to feel welcome and to be glad that she is a Saints Girl!

Mothers' Club

L-R: Peta Ware, Martha Rundle and Kerry Reade at the Mothers' Club Welcome morning tea.

Thank you to the School community for making the 2011 Gift Box Stall such a success. Last year the School community was very generous and inventive, contributing $4000 to our overall fundraising effort.

In preparation for the Mothers’ Club stall at the Twilight Cinema, this week we have sent home a gift box with the girls in anticipation that families may like to fill them, using a theme of their choice. The filled baskets make great gifts for birthdays, Easter, Mothers' Day and much more.

Alternatively, if you are not able to fill a gift box, we ask you to return the box and cellophane to the Development Office and consider making a donation. The Mothers’ Club will then make up a basket for you with your donation.

For some inspiration, sample boxes can be viewed in the Front Office.

Please return your boxes to the Development Office by 23 February 2012.

We look forward to seeing your family at this great event and selling you a wonderful gift box.

Thank you for your support.

Rowing Camp

Top: Sophie Terp, Emily Hage, Theodora Galanis, Alice Watson, Lucy Martin. Above (left) Amelia Gare. Above (right) Mirinaa Parameswaram and Ella Kollias.

The first St Peter's Girls' Rowing camp took place at Murray Bridge in the final week of the School holidays, from Friday 27 to Monday 30 January.

Ten girls were involved with the full camp (Georgina Belder, Isabelle McIver, Sarah Parkinson, Sophie Terp,  Carri Welsby, Emily Hage, Theodora Galanis, Alice Watson, Lucy Martin and Annabel Parkinson). Mirnaa Parameswaram, Amelia Gare, Ella Kollias and Nikola Carr came for the day on Sunday .

We stayed in cabins in the Avoca Dell Caravan Park. Each day began early with girls on the water by 6.00am, doing a long row (up to 12km) until 8.00am. Breakfast was very welcome after this. Two more 'on water' training sessions took place each day, as well as video analysis of technique in the breaks. The girls worked very hard during the four day camp and took advantage of every opportunity to improve their rowing; and their progress was amazing. They also became very good at taping blisters on their hands and feet and continued to row with full determination despite obvious discomfort and pain.

Along with the girls I would like to thank all the parents who assisted with transporting girls to and from the camp and the following parents who helped in a number of ways during the  camp: Annabel Sweeney for staying on Friday and shopping and helping the girls settle in; Bec Wetherill for staying the whole time and being 'cabin Mum' to the younger girls as well as helping with boats and water sessions; Amanda Parkinson for rowing with the older girls and helping out with boats each session; and Heather Jones for coming on Sunday. She helped the younger girls get their boat on the water and coxed the senior crew. Your involvement helped make the camp a success and it was very much appreciated.

The girls are well prepared for the first regatta this term on Saturday 4 February at West Lakes.

The next opportunity to join the Rowing Club will be towards the end of Term 3, ready for the 2012/2013 rowing season. Any student in Years 7-10 who is interested in joining as a rower or coxswain should see Mrs Harfield in order to be added to the list and receive information.

Junior Sport Practice Policy: If the weather forecast is listed as 35 degrees or higher in the daily Advertiser, practice will be cancelled. Morning trainings WILL NOT be cancelled. On days of hot weather cancellations the school buses will depart at the early timeslot.

Match Policy: If the weather is forecast to be 35 degrees or higher all matches will also be cancelled.

In the event that sports training is cancelled due to inclement weather or any other unforeseen reason the following procedures will be undertaken by staff and students:

  • The decision to cancel training will be made by the Sports Administrator in consultation with the Principal or her delegate;
  • The Sports Administrator will communicate this message to parents through the SMS system and to staff and students via email;
  • If training has been cancelled, all students must report to their teacher/coach after school in the gymnasium before being dismissed. Any student who fails to report to their teacher/coach will be deemed to have missed training and the appropriate consequences will be applied;
  • Teachers rostered on for sports training that night are to assist with the supervision of students for the duration of the normal sports training period (ie 3.45pm- 4.45pm)
  • The Sports Administrator will draw up a roster of supervision venues and staff involved. This will then be communicated to Front Reception so that parents know where to locate their children.
